Recently on Facebook, there was an interesting discussion regarding continuous EEG (cEEG) in the NICU. The question that started the thread went something like this, “How can you apply a full set of 10/20 electrodes on a neonate’s head, which is the size of an orange, without getting a salt-bridge?” A great discussion ensued—learn about options for electrode placement for some of our most vulnerable patients.

The reimbursement for CPT code 95951 – long-duration EEG recording and monitoring – is critical to providing high quality and sustainable care for patients. To that end, we have been working diligently to form a coalition within the neurodiagnostic community to address changes to the code.

Lifelines is proud to be a major sponsor of Epilepsy Awareness Day at Disneyland, which was held Nov. 6 - 8. The event was founded by parents Brad and Candy Levy as a grateful thank you to their daughter Sofie's team of doctors and as a way to build awareness for epilepsy. Now seizure free, Sofie has inspired her family to be advocates for epilepsy diagnosis, treatment and research efforts.

As more research points to the benefits of hypothermia induction in neonates to protect brain function, never has there been more need to have the entire NICU team focused on working together to create a “brain-focused culture.” This includes nursing, neonatology, neurology, and the transport team working together aggressively to identify HIE (hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy) and begin brain cooling early.

Many of us began our careers in neurodiagnostic labs and/or epilepsy monitoring units (EMUs), and we credit those jobs for the compassion and passion we put into what we do at Lifelines. Over the past several years, we’ve been at the forefront of bringing the EMU into the homes of patients with Cloud-based monitoring.
